An FR-4 PCB is a printed circuit board constructed using FR-4 material, a glass-reinforced epoxy laminate that meets the stringent UL 94V-0 flammability rating, making it an essential component in various electronic applications.

FR-4 is the most commonly used PCB material due to its excellent properties:

The TG (glass transition temperature) indicates the temperature at which the material shifts from a solid to a more pliable state. Standard FR-4 materials typically have a TG value between 130°C and 140°C. However, higher TG options, such as FR-4 TG150°C, TG170°C, TG180°C, and beyond TG200°C, are also available, all meeting UL 94V-0 standards.

The standard thickness for an FR-4 PCB is 1.6 mm, but they can be produced in thicknesses ranging from 0.1 mm to 10.0 mm to suit various application needs.

There are no specific requirements for solder type when assembling components on an FR-4 PCB. Commonly, a lead-free alloy comprising 96.5% tin, 3% silver, and 0.5% copper is used.

  • Copper Layers: Single-sided FR-4 PCBs have copper foil on one side only, while double-sided PCBs have copper on both sides.
  • Component Mounting: Single-sided boards typically have solder joints on one side, with components on the opposite side. In contrast, double-sided boards can be soldered on both sides.
  • Circuit Complexity: Single-sided PCBs have one layer of copper trace, while double-sided PCBs allow for routing on both sides, interconnected by plated vias, making them ideal for more complex circuits.
